Primary Educator
My philosophy of primary education is grounded in the belief that children thrive when strong relationships, explicit instruction, purposeful practice, and meaningful learning experiences work together. I draw on evidence-informed approaches, including the science of reading and research-based mathematics instruction, to build secure foundations in literacy and numeracy while encouraging curiosity, communication, and flexible thinking. I use assessment responsively to identify individual needs, provide appropriate support and challenge, and help students recognize their own growth. Through collaborative classroom communities and genuine partnerships with families, I aim to develop confident, capable, and increasingly independent learners.
My approach to literacy is grounded in the science of reading and the understanding that skilled reading develops through explicit, systematic instruction. I prioritize phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, oral language, and comprehension while using assessment to identify student needs and provide responsive support. Through Beyond Leveled Books, I have also developed decodable and instructional resources designed to help students build accuracy, confidence, and independence as readers.
My approach to mathematics balances conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, problem solving, and mathematical communication. I use explicit instruction, carefully sequenced examples, purposeful practice, and rich tasks to help students recognize patterns, make connections, and explain their reasoning. Through Beyond the Algorithm, I share resources and ideas that move students beyond simply following procedures toward deeper, more flexible mathematical thinking.
I build partnerships with families by creating practical opportunities for them to engage with their children’s learning. Through literacy and mathematics family nights, as well as resources shared through Beyond Leveled Books and Beyond the Algorithm, I help families understand effective instructional approaches and support learning at home. These experiences strengthen home–school connections and position families as active partners in student growth.
I contribute to school communities through collaborative leadership, curriculum development, professional learning, and resource creation. My experience includes facilitating professional development, supporting colleagues, teaching at the undergraduate level, and writing mathematics materials for Pearson. I aim to strengthen teaching and learning by sharing practical ideas, contributing to collective improvement, and helping educators translate research into effective classroom practice.
